Projector Types

In this lesson we learned about the different types of projectors as well as some of the terminology used when discussing projector specifications.

CRT - Cathode Ray Tube

LCD - Liquid Crystal Display

DLP - Digital Light Processing

Single chip ( White Light + Colour wheel )

Triple Chip ( Red, Green and Blue Lights )

LED - Light Emitting Diode

LASER ( RGB or DLP/Phosphor )

PICO ( Handheld/Portable )

Brightness

Brightness is measured normally with the unit ANSI Lumens

ANSI stands for American National Standards Institute

ANSI lumens calculate a 9 point average brightness compared to standard lumens which takes brightness from a single point

The formulae for an ideal brightness is 500 + ANSI/m²

To calculate brightness, the formulae is

( Square Meter ) x ( Lumens per Square Metre )

Resolution

The resolution is determined by the video content

Audience position has to be taken into account when setting the resolution

Contrast Ratio

Contrast ratio is the Difference Between White and Black on the Projected Surface

Contrast ratio is affected by stray and ambient light

Aspect Ratio

Aspect Ratio is the Shape of the Projected Image

Changing the Aspect Ratio will affect the quality of the projection

Lens Throw Calculation

Screen Width x Throw Ratio = Throw Distance

Throw Distance / Throw Ratio = Screen Width

Throw Ratio is determined by Lens Type

1:1 = 1 metre away : 1 metre wide

Media Server

A Media Server is a custom made piece of hardware or software for the purpose of video playback
